Chicago's 'Father Mac' Dies at 95
Monday January 3, 2005
Monsignor Ignatius D. McDermott, founder of Haymarket Center, a drug and alcohol rehab facility which helped thousands of Chicago street people who were addicted to alcohol and drugs, died Dec. 31 after a brief illness. "His 68 years in the priesthood were spent taking care of people in need. He rescued people in the grips of alcoholism and convinced them they were good," said Emeritus Bishop Timothy Lyne. "His great virtue was convincing people not to give up on themselves, even when others might have."
