Acamprosate May Help Recovering Alcoholics Sleep

Monday September 4, 2006
One of the withdrawal symptoms that people who quit drinking complain about the most is not being able to sleep well. In fact, sleeping problems during early recovery may be one of the biggest relapse triggers. Now there may be a medication that will eleviate those sleep disturbances.

A French study has found that acamprosate, a medication widely used in Europe to reduce cravings in abstinent alcoholics, may also help them sleep. "Results indicate that acamprosate objectively improves sleep disturbances of alcohol-dependent patients who are trying to stop alcohol intake," said Luc Staner, director of the Sleep Laboratory of the Centre Hospitalier de Rouffach.
