Is There a Reason for Alcohol Dementia?

Saturday February 10, 2007
In our Forum, Selaine asks: "Anyone out there have any experience with alcoholic dementia? My husband, who has drank for years, has been exhibiting new and bizarre behavior. He is having big lapses in memory, forgets whole conversations (doesn't even remember talking to the person), repeats himself over and over (even when sober), one night told me that he had been talking to dead people and another time came crying to me about something that happened in Viet Nam (which I know didn't happen).

He doesn't even remember telling me the story. The last was him picking a fight with my 18 year old for no reason. It was so bad that I had to call the cops. I told him the next time he acts like that I am going to have him committed. The cop even told me it would be the thing to do. He has gotten scared over this (although I don't think he has stopped drinking) and has made an appointment with a therapist and doctor. But I know that there is a physical reason for the dementia, right?
