Children of Alcoholics Week Feb. 8-14

Wednesday February 4, 2009
With an estimated 25 percent of all children in the United States, approximately 27.8 million, affected or exposed to a family alcohol problem, the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) each year promotes Children of Alcoholics Week to bring public attention to the plight of these children.

Children of alcoholics are at increased risk of a range of problems, including physical illness, emotional disturbances, behavior problems, lower educational performance, and susceptibility to alcoholism or other addiction later in life, according to NACoA.

Children of Alcoholics Week 2009 is Feb. 8-14 with the theme, "Be Among the Champions for Children this Annual Celebration of Hope and Healing." NACoA's goal is to have a society in which children of alcoholics are encouraged to seek help and have access to caring adults who can help.

Also, the National Association for Children of Alcoholics celebrates its 26th anniversary on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2009. The NACoA suggests these ideas for raising awareness of the plight of children of alcoholics.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention's Children's Program Kit gives treatment providers and prevention centers resources to help children make sense of what they have been experiencing, cope with the stresses of their family problems, and strengthen their potential for resilience.

Educating the youth of America about alcoholism and/or drug addiction is one of the most important and difficult tasks that parents, educators and law-enforcement have facing them today.I,as the child of an alcoholic, understand this all too well.If parents can educate their children at an early age they will be better able to combat the pressures they(children)face in today’s society.Unconditional love isn’t a cureall but it helps,as well ashaving an open and honest relationship with “our” children.Take care America after all the heartache is over it can get better!
