Anna Nicole's Enablers Face Felony Charges
Last week, two California doctors and the attorney-turned-boyfriend of deceased model Anna Nicole Smith were charged with multiple felonies related to supplying her with the drugs that eventually led to her overdose death. Charged were Dr. Khristine Eroshevich, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Smith's lawyer and companion, Howard K. Stern in a case in which enabling plays a central role.In announcing the charges, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said that Stern was Anna Nicole's "principal enabler" in the conspiracy to provide her with drugs.
On Feb. 8, 2007, former Playboy Playmate and reality television model Anna Nicole Smith, 39, was found dead in her Hard Rock Casino motel room in Broward County, Florida. An autopsy revealed that Smith had nine different medications in her system and her death was ruled an accidental overdose.
None of the prescription drugs found in her motel room when she died were in her name. They were in fictitious names or in the name of Howard Stern. At the time, her doctors claimed they used false names to protect the privacy of a celebrity, a common practice.
To directly or indirectly supply drugs to someone who is an addict, or to buy alcohol for an alcoholic, is of course an overt act of enabling. But enabling behaviors are not always so obvious. Many times, friends and relatives who believe they are helping the addict, are actually enabling them to continue their destructive behavior.
