The app is the idea of the Scottish Government's Healthier Scotland campaign. It will be free until March 2013.
The application, called the "Drinking Mirror App," allows users to upload or take a photo of themselves and then add information about their alcohol consumption. It then shows half of their face as it looks now and the other half as it would appear in 10 years with weight gain, discolored skin, wrinkles and red splotches that binge drinking can cause.
Works With Android, iPhone
The app is available for both iPhone and Android smartphones. Links to download the app are available at drinksmarter.org. If you don't have a smartphone, there is also a web version of the app on the website.
The app is one part of the "Drop a Glass Size" campaign begun by Scottish Health Secretary Alex Neil, aimed at reducing harmful drinking habits.
"Evidence shows us that most people who drink alcohol, particularly at home, have no idea of how much they are actually consuming. This campaign will show people how small changes to their drinking habits can have a significant impact on their health and wellbeing," he said in a news release.
