Not drinking when everyone else is can be very difficult, but it can be done with careful planning and determination. Here are some tips on how to resist that urge to "just have one" to celebrate with everyone else during holiday season get together.

I avoid drinking at parties by not attending parties where I know there will be any type of binge drinking. Some may say or think, “you can’t avoid all types of parties.”

However, the truth is yes I can. There are a few people that I can be around who drink. They drink normally and only have one or two at the most.

Have a backup plan. Hang out with people who don’t drink. If you feel uncomfortable being around alcohol, just don’t do it. My sobriety is the most important thing in my life.

Just don’t go, or if you must go, then just make an appearance, don’t take that drink and leave. It can be done. If someone puts a drink in your hand, just walk around with it, don’t drink it and leave as soon as you can. You might even get by with having a nonalcoholic drink in your hand as long as you can stand it. I find that the company of drinkers is quite annoying, especially when they start telling the same old story for the 5th time. And to think I used to be just like them! Now sober for 20 years plus.
