College Uses Drug Dogs to Search Dorms

Tuesday September 2, 2003
After finding a methamphetamine lab in a dormitory room last February, the University of Alabama at Birmingham decided to keep the drug dogs around this fall to continue checking on-campus dormitories.

"Occasionally there have been, and there also will be, random inspections by narcotics dogs for our housing facilities," Andy Marsch, assistant vice president for student life, told The Birminham News. "That will be something we continue on a random basis."

In February, two students and another man were arrested after methamphetamine lab tools were found in one of the student's room. DEA agents also found marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs in the suite. Sarah Suzanne Forrest of Florida and James William Phillips of Hueytown, who no longer attend the school, were arrested.

"If we find anyone who was involved with illegal drug activity, they will be removed," Marsch said. "There's no second chances where that is concerned. We work real hard at providing a safe environment in housing. We're a part of society and this stuff exists, but our goal is to keep it off campus."
