New Zealand's Only Residential Treatment Center Closes

Monday October 27, 2003
Due to a decision by the Ministry of Health to fund only outpatient services for the treatment of alcoholics and addicts, New Zealand's only remaining drug and alcohol rehabilitation center will close it doors next month.

Hanmer Clinics, Ltd. will shut down Nov. 28, leaving the country without a single residential center, although demand for its services has increased. John Beattie, chairman of the organization, said Hanmer Clinics had exhausted all avenues for possible alternative funding for the treatment center.

"At the end of the day, we are a charitable organization and private funding is not consistent enough for us to be confident of continuing to operate residential services." he told the Dominion Post. The organization will now focus its efforts on its outpatient services and outreach programs.
