A new survey in the United Kingdom has found that almost two-thirds of young women admit to drinking so much that they woke up the next morning with virtually no memory of events of the night before.

The 2003 Freedom Years survey of 1,000 women age 18-28 polled across the UK, conducted by Company magazine, reported that 66 percent of young women who responded had experienced waking up the next day with almost no recollection of what happened the night before -- a phenomenon sometimes known as "blackout drinking." In 2001, only 42 percent reported having blackouts.

According to Ananova the survey also found:

• 60 percent admitted to drinking 21 units of alcohol in one or two weekend sessions, rather than throughout the week as recommended. (A unit of alcohol is 10 ml of pure alcohol; a pint of lager beer contains about 2 units).
• 29 percent said they had lost items during a bout of drinking -- keys, money and other valuables -- up from 20 percent in 2001.
• 50 percent said they had experienced waking up at home and not having any idea how they got there, up from 33 percent.
• 10 percent admitted that they had been escorted home by a total stranger.

All of the women surveyed were single, had never been married and never had children.
