Former Raiders Center Shot by Police

Monday January 17, 2005
Barret Robbins, former Oakland Raiders center, is in critical condition in a Miami Beach hospital after he was shot during a struggle with a police officer who was investigating a burglary at a South Beach office building.

Robbins, who is best remembered for missing a team meeting the day before the 2003 Super Bowl, was shot multiple times in the torso during a struggle with a Miami Beach detective who said he was trying to keep Robbins from getting his gun during the confrontation on the second floor of an office building.

Robbins, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, admitted in 2003 that he had quit taking his medications and was self-medicating with alcohol when he missed playing in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Robbins was arrested Christmas Eve after he allegedly hit a San Francisco security guard who escorted him from a hotel bar. He was charged with battery and public drunkenness following the incident at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. He was released by the Raiders in July, after he tested positive for steroids.

Robbins was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
