With an estimated 25 percent of all children in the United States, an estimated 27.8 million, affected or exposed to a family alcohol problem, the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) each year promotes Children of Alcoholics Week to bring public attention to the plight of these children.
Children of alcoholics are at increased risk of a range of problems, including physical illness, emotional disturbances, behavior problems, lower educational performance, and susceptibility to alcoholism or other addiction later in life, according to NACoA.
Children of Alcoholics Week 2006 is Feb. 12-18 with the theme, "A Celebration of Hope and Healing." NACoA's goal is to have a society in which children of alcoholics are encouraged to seek help and have access to caring adults who can help.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention's Children's Program Kit gives treatment providers and prevention centers resources to help children make sense of what they have been experiencing, cope with the stresses of their family problems, and strengthen their potential for resilience.
