On October 18, 1997, About.com (then called The Mining Co.) opened chat rooms for each of its Guide sites. It wasn't long before the open Alcoholism Recovery chat room (Room 1) became active 24 hours a day.

Over the years, other chat rooms were added for online meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon Family Groups, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Narcotic Anonymous and other 12 step groups.

In February 2004, About.com closed all of its chat rooms and the Alcoholism site chat rooms were moved to StepChat.com. All of the resources associated with the chat rooms were also moved to StepChat.com.

The "open" chat rooms are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Online meetings are conducted during scheduled meeting times in the individual chat meeting rooms. Here is the schedule for various meetings:

The chat rooms are password protected for security reasons. To join any of the rooms, sign up to get a password.
