Live and Let Live

One of my early Al-Anon friends who came to mean a lot to me used to tell the story about how she got the "Let Live" part of this slogan right away. What a relief it was to be able to let go and not be "responsible" for someone else's life anymore!

Have to admit that I jumped at that chance too! Loved it! But she went on to say that she was in the program for many years, before she ever noticed that slogan started off with LIVE and Let Live.

That was the hard part, learning how to actually live my own life. After so many years of living somebody's else life -- spending so much of my energy looking after others -- I had a real struggle learning that it was okay to look after me. It was not easy to do things just for me, without feeling guilty about it.

But thanks to Al-Anon and that precious lady in my first home group, I slowly got the point that it was okay! I deserved to have a life too! I deserved to have good things happen.

But it just didn't feel comfortable. It was strange new territory for me. So, I did like it was suggested in the rooms, I faked it until I made it! And slowly I am beginning to learn how to LIVE and Let Live.
