* Alcohol abusers:  drinkers who during the past year experienced at least 
  one severe or moderately severe consequence of alcohol abuse, such as job 
  loss, arrest or illness.

** Alcoholics:  drinkers who during the past year experienced one or more 
   symptoms of alcohol dependence.  To be counted as alcoholic, a respondent 
   either had to report at least one symptom of alcohol withdrawal, or at 
   least one symptom of loss of control plus one other symptom of dependence, 
   excluding withdrawal.
