Hour To Hour, The First 30 Days
A new meditation book by Shelly Marshall is designed to help newcomers through the first 30 days of recovery.Marshall, who has been clean and sober since June 6, 1969, wrote Day By Day, one of the first ever 12-step recovery daily meditation books. Now she has put together Hour to Hour, which is a meditation book for those in the first month of abstinence from alcohol and other drugs.
Designed to be read at the HALT moments (too hungry, angry, lonely, or tired) and to combat cravings, it also contains a phone list for recording the numbers of health care professionals, sponsors and fellow 12-step members. Each hourly reflection is wisdom and advice from people in recovery and is repeated once in the day, evening and nightly hours so no message is missed.

As Marshall says on the web site, "It is to be read upon arising, upon retiring, whenever a person craves drugs or alcohol, and if the person is scared or angry. It's basically a HALT book. They simply look up the number of days they have off alcohol and drugs, locate the current hour, and read their 'special' message. There is no other recovery tool like the 'pocket sponsor'."
"Hour to Hour is desperately needed because the worst time in recovery from addiction is the first 30 days," she writes. "Before treatment centers proliferated, AA members would take the newcomer under their wings for the first months. But once treatment became widely available, AA members stopped the initial "baby" sitting and took newcomers to the professionals."

"As a result 12 step members stopped passing on the skills and obligations of taking care of the new members," Marshall says. "Now in the wake of managed care, the 28 day treatment center is nearly gone. Treatment centers are not much of an option for folks anymore and there is a vacancy in the recovery market. The treatment centers aren't sitting with them for those first crucial weeks and neither are the 12 step members.""We were not meant to be alone during those first crucial days, and yet times have changed." she said. "You can't be with the newcomers all the time like in the early days of AA & NA, but Hour to Hour, the Pocket Sponsor can."
Marshall has published sample pages from the book on the web site. The cost of the book is reasonable, and discounts are offered for bulk orders.
