Sandy Kay's Holiday Tip
Dealing with the holidays can be especially difficult, especially in early sobriety. My first year, it was explained to me that I was given a gift of making new memories that could be whatever I chose. For once, I could have memories that would not shame or embarrass me.
Make a Gratitude List
For Thanksgiving, the obvious way to get through is with gratitude. Make a gratitude list of everything you have, which should include your eyesight to read this, as well as the chair you are sitting on.Many people do not have these things. It is easy to be grateful for the big things in our life, but there are times that we overlook the obvious. Make sure to include the obvious on your list.
I Need to Focus
Two years ago over the Thanksgiving holiday, my husband died suddenly. I am grateful that God gave me the opportunity to have seven years of sobriety with him, before his death. The holidays are hard to get through, but sometimes what I need to focus on is just staying sober and remembering that as long as I do not pick up today, there is hope. If I decide to pick up, then all hope is gone.
A World of Miracles
Live today with gratitude for what you have been given. Even if you have to be grateful for recognizing that you are feeling lonely, it is a feeling. Live today with hope. As long as I do not pick up, there is a world of miracles happening every day. It is only when I give up hope that I am defeated.May your life be filled with the gratitude and hope of the holiday season.
