The 8th annual National Alcohol Screening Day is scheduled Thursday, April 6, 2006, providing outreach, screening, and education about alcohol's effects on health at thousands of locations around the United States.

National Alcohol Screening Day provides information about alcohol and health as well as free, anonymous screening for alcohol-use disorders at community, college, primary health care, military and employment settings.

The theme for this year's screening day, "Live On the Rocks?" focuses on a broad health message that is applicable to anyone who drinks alcohol.

NASD is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The program is coordinated by Screening for Mental Health, Inc, a not-for-profit organization.

"Research indicates that brief interventions – such as talking about your drinking with a health professional at an NASD event – can help resolve mild to moderate alcohol problems as well as encourage those with more serious problems to seek treatment," said Douglas G. Jacobs, MD, President and CEO of Screening for Mental Health and an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

In 2005, an estimated 221,000 people attended a National Alcohol Screening Day event. Of those that completed a screening form, 45 percent scored in the hazardous or harmful drinking range.
