Gave Me a Foundation for Recovery

Share Your Story: What I Learned in Rehab

How long were you in rehab?

I entered Smith House when it was simply a little house with a few bedrooms for detox. After the detox I was transferred to Tom Smith at San Francisco General for treatment. I stayed in detox seven days if that then transferred to Tom Smith treatment. I really didn't know Smith House was still around because I came in the latter part of the 80s to early 90s. I acquired 12 years and relapsed but I just had my 8th Birthday. I'm so thankful for the foundation from the Smith house. I just wanted to Thank you for my life.

What was the most helpful feature of rehab?

The tender loving care and the way they treated me was awesome. They treated me like a human not like I had boo boo on me - that's what I was used to. I never had received love growing up, just abuse, so that felt real good. I learned not to judge people and how to turn my will and my life over to the care of a loving God as I understood him. Thanks.

Advice

  • At detox they will give love. That's what we all look for any way. No matter how bad you feel just give yourself a chance. Stay. You never have to drink again or do drugs.
