Alcohol Awareness: Types of Alcohol Problems

You don't have to be a full-blown alcoholic to experience problems with alcohol consumption. You don't have to be a daily drinker to have a problem with alcohol. And you do not have to drink a large amount of alcohol to be drinking at potentially harmful levels.

There are many different levels drinkers and almost as many types of alcohol abuse problems.

As part of our Alcohol Awareness Month observance, we are reviewing the types of drinkers and kinds of alcohol problems they can experience. Could it be that you have an alcohol problem and don't realize it?

Five Types of Alcoholics
Researchers found that the largest percentage of alcoholics in the United States are young adults, many of whom are highly functional and do not have a family history of alcoholism.

Nine Types of Binge Drinkers Identified
Scientists studying the social and psychological characteristics of drinkers have identified nine types of binge drinkers, ranging from those who drink to relieve stress to those who practically live at the local bar.

Alcohol: How Much Is Too Much?
But how do you know if you are drinking at a safe level? How much alcohol can you drink and still be considered a low-risk drinker? How much is puts you in the high-risk group?

What Is At-Risk Alcohol Drinking?
If you are drinking at harmful levels, what exactly does that mean? What are you "at risk" of? Do you know that "low risk" drinking doesn't mean "no risks?"
