Smoking Prompts Binge Drinkers to Drink More

Wednesday August 30, 2006
A new study has found that smoking while drinking actually reduces blood alcohol concentrations, meaning that people who are drinking to get drunk, such as binge drinkers, have to drink even more alcohol to feel the same effect as non-smokers. The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine research found nicotine keeps the stomach from emptying normally, keeping alcohol from being absorbed in the intestines.

"Since the desired effect of alcohol is significantly diminished by nicotine – particularly among heavy or binge drinkers such as college students – this may encourage drinkers to drink more to achieve the pleasurable or expected effect," said Wei-Jung A. Chen, in a news release. "In other words, cigarette smoking appears to promote the consumption of alcohol."

This is about the subject; Smoking prompts binge drinkers to drink more.

I am very concerned about the last comment that was made, allegedly saying that smoking is the cause of drinking.

I resent that remark greatly and am getting totally fed up of people saying that smoking is the cause of this and that. People are under the opinion that getting drunk and legless is better for you than smoking a couple of cigarettes.

I am a smoker and at the same time tee-total, I never drink but I do see the effects that alcohol has on people and personally feel this does more harm than good and should be therefore completely banned. There are more incidents of violence, accidents and anti-social behaviour from people who drink. Alcohol and drugs like cannabis and cocaine and such alike are all mind altering drugs that should be illegalised. I know that cocaine and heroine are but so should alcohol.

It would be nice to get a reply but as there are so many people out there that are for drinking than smoking I do not really expect any.
