Question: Why Is Sedative Misuse Dangerous?

Answer: Because sedatives (barbiturates and benzodiazepines) act to depress brain functions and the central nervous system, any dose over the prescribed amount can cause unconsciousness, respiratory failure and death. It doesn't matter why sedatives are prescribed -- they can all be dangerous if not taken as directed, or if they are taken with alcohol or other drugs.
