Dealing with the Holidays

Updated February 08, 2014

Visitors to the About.com Alcoholism Forum were asked to share their personal experiences in maintaining sobriety during the holiday season. Their replies provide helpful tips for those who may be struggling to stay clean and sober through the temptations of the holidays.

Reed A's Holiday Tip

First, this is my 11th consecutive sober Christmas season. I recommend going to twice as many meetings during the Holidays.

Also get some phone numbers of newcomers and stay in touch with them. Getting to know new people in the program can be refreshing.

As always, drive yourself, so you can leave parties or gatherings, when you feel you need to. Invite a sober friend to come along. Make sure there are some festive non alcoholic drinks or bring your own.

Don't feel stressed about exchanging gifts. Remember, just showing up sober is the greatest gift you can give.
