Hi, your response on itching was VERY interesting, I have wanted info on this for ages. As someone who never takes pills, can I ask what benedryl is generally used for and is it available over the counter or do you need a prescription? Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi, this is day 53 for me and yes, I am still itching but to a much lesser degree. My neck and face area are now the worst but this is where the redness was at its worse and the skin was very dry. The redness is now receding but the skin is still itchy, I slaver it with cream. There was a time when my legs itched unbearably at odd moments but this has greatly improved. I would say that my symptoms were like yours until about 5 weeks in, I drink plenty of water to try and rehydrate my skin. I agree with you though, it's maddening at the time. Hope this helps.

Hi GettingFitAgain, thanks so much for the great information about benedryl. It gets rid of the itching but allows the toxins out. Very good to know. I am taking some tonight because we got totally "bombed" with pollen this year. 500 is high but we got 10,000. Yikes! benedryl has helped me with many allergies over the years. I wonder if we always have toxins to get rid of? even when sober? even when eating a healthy diet? Best wishes to you, GettingFitAgain. ( - :

May I ask how long since you stopped drinking? I ask because it sounds like you are still experiencing the itching. I think I might have my liver tested. Thank you for the info!

Thanks Big Fish...

for the reply. I think I have the bases covered with vitamins and such. I'm probably eating better and taking better care of myself than ever before. Doing this is like peeling off layers of an onion, and I start to see more clearly some of the real underlying issues I have had, like potentially the sleep phase disorder. I sleep really well these days, just not on the schedule most people do. It helps with the job (at least for now) but it stresses the family a bit and makes some aspects of life a little challenging. It's a better problem to have than drinking every day. So I am always looking for ways to get better and just deal with whatever I can't control the best I can. I'll be trying some white noise to help sleep this week, and looking forward to it.

Why the Cravings?

You know, I feel better since I stopped drinking, the withdrawal symptoms have passed, and I love the way I feel when I wake up in the morning. Also, I'm just generally more hopeful and optimistic than I was while I was drinking heavily, privately, and daily. So with all that going on in my conscious mind, what is it that creates the craving to make me want to go to the liquor store, buy a pint of booze, and start drinking again? I don't get it -- I feel like the guy with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other, and I can't seem to shut up the devil. What is it about human nature (or at least my nature) by which we don't do what we want to do, and we continue to do what we don't want to do? If I could figure that one out, I'd write a book and start a series of self-help classes and give Tony Robbins a run for his money. I'd also be on Oprah and Dr. Phil.

To guest getting fit again

Good for you if you don't need this site! I seem to. I'm with robert 1952 on the twelve steps. When I went to AA , and all of the big book, too, it seemed that everyone was outdoing themselves about how awful they were while drinking and the bad that they did got worse and worse. Whereas, on this site, I get HELPFUL comments and ideas and not so much , if any "awfulizing" . If I'm not on this sight I'm probably drinking, maybe not.AA here is not anonymous. One person, in particular, goes out of her way to give very subtle hints that someone goes. I can't figure out if she thinks everyone else is stupid or whether she's trying to expose people. Anyway, it's not good.

To Mary

Mary, once again we are in a similar boat. I ended up in the ER the other night as the result of a nasty ankle injury playing basketball. Not broken but facing some possible severe ligament damage. Stone cold sober! I'm used to only getting banged up when I'm drunk. I have a few appointments this week to see the extent of the damage but today is 62 days sober and still committed.

I'm glad your going to give three months a try. I think this will give you time to heal body and mind so you can see clearly. Keep us posted. Love and hope

Thanks Bigfish

Just decreased the Valium dose once again so wake with cold seats, mild shakes, irritability and other same old symptoms but not very severe. I'm reading along not posting much as I'm busier than usual at work and with more daylight out with kids later, miss hearing from the breakfast club. There is a new batch busy making their lives better, this site reminds me of a river looks almost the same from day to day but filled with quirks and uniqueness. You are a constant presence swimming in the stream of serenity. Love and hope

To: Activenomore

Hi activenomore, I have been an advocate of the b12 for energy and fighting cravings and general good health. Some say it helps the sleep too. I believe the magnesium helps my sleep too. People with liver/kidney disorders may want to check with the doctor first though. Sweet dreams to you, activenomore.
